The
Adirondack Guide-Boat
Kenneth and Helen Durant
With Plans and Commentary by John Gardner
Kenneth Durant's first visit to the Adirondacks was in 1890 at the age of less than a year. He made this visit in a pack basket on the back of a guide and this was the start of a long love affair with the region. Durant's family spent summers in the Adirondacks and he was intimately familiar with guide-boats, having spent considerable time in them as a youth. Beginning in 1957 and continuing until his death in 1972 Durant painstakingly researched everything there was to know about the boats and guides. This work was in close collaboration with John Gardner at Mystic Seaport and the resulting book has come to be the definitive text on guide-boats.

Hallie E. Bond
Hallie Bond, Curator of the Adirondack Museum, brings to the subject many years of experience with the boats of the Adirondacks. This book is not strictly about the guide-boat, however there is good coverage of the craft as well as all the other Adirondack boats and the region itself. The book includes a catalog of boats (195 craft) in the Adirondack Museum collection. Anyone interested in the boats of the Adirondacks will not be disappointed with this book.
